A conveyor system loads grain onto a ship at the Port of Oswego Authority in 2022. The port recently received a $4 million federal grant that will allow it to upgrade its rail infrastructure and purchase a $2 million state-of-the-art conveyor system that will allow it to load grain onto ships faster and more efficiently, a major boon to the port’s grain export center.

OSWEGO — When workers at the Port of Oswego Authority load a ship, speed and efficiency are crucial, but with the port’s old conveyor system they could handle barely 18,000 bushels of grain an hour.

“Grain companies especially want to load and get out of there,” said Bill Scriber, the port’s executive director. “So we were taking a little bit longer to load a ship.”
